Welcome February - The Shortest Month
January 22, 2009
So Much To Do In So Few Days!
February may be the shortest month, but it is chock full of things to do. We start the month off with Super Bowl XLIII on the first. Call in a bunch of friends, crack open a few jars of Appalachian Naturals salsa, some chips and beer and you have a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! If you live in the Punxsutawney PA area however, you'd better not do too much Super Bowl celebrating or you'll miss the start of Groundhog Day.
On February 9th and 10th we'll watch another group of real champions at the 133rd Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden. 169 breeds and varieties of dogs will be judged in seven different groups: Hounds, Terriers, Non-Sporting, Sporting, Herding, Working and Toy. One dog from each group is named Best In Breed and one will be judged Best In Show.
Last year we asked our clients to send us photos or their "champions" and tell us a little about them. Our dog Dana holds the distinction of being judged Best in the Herding class again this year. We may be a little prejudice but she's still a champ at keeping us from being overrun by chipmunks or squirrels.
Best in the Sporting class goes to our friend Sadie. I understand that you'd better not miss a shot while bird hunting with her. She'll give you a look that lets you know you are totally incompetent and strongly suggests that you go back the range for more practice. Sadie is about to have her first litter. She's doing fine, it's her human we are concerned may not make it thru the birth.
Best of the Working class was the most difficult to judge. Many of our clients' dogs work very hard with their humans all day long. Gunner, Luci, and Sparky's owners all have home offices which the dogs get to work in all day long.
Fox is hands down winner in the Toy class. There is no toy in the world that does not belong to Fox and he will very nicely let you know that fact.
Don't forget Valentines Day this year is Saturday, February 14th. We have a valentine gift basket that is just perfect for the special guy or girl. We have a cute selection of mugs and smaller gifts that are perfect for the kids. Call or stop by the Studio or check out our valentine selection on line. Watch your e-mail for some awesome specials!
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent is February 25th this year, meaning Easter will fall in the middle of April. On February 24th we celebrate the end of Mardi Gras, Pancake Day, Fastnachts Day, and Paczki Day. (click here for Paczki recipe) I don't think it's a coincidence that these days fall the day before Lent. There was a time when fasting during Lent was a much more common practice than it is today. Therefore, the day before was the last chance to party and to load up on carbs:) The super heavy dough and fillings would sure fill you up (and out!).
Little February has only 28 days. We suggest you celebrate each of them with enthusiasm.
